เว็บไซต์ Digitimes Research ในไต้หวันอ้างว่า Apple จะเลิกผลิต iPad เวอร์ชันแรกแล้ว โดยเตรียมที่จะออก iPad เวอร์ชันใหม่ที่เร็วกกว่าเดิมด้วยการเปลี่ยนโพรเซสเซอร์ A4 ของ Apple เองไปใช้ ARM Cortex-A9 อีกทั้งยังเพิ่มหน่วยความจำ (RAM) เป็นสองเท่าจากเดิม 256MB เป็น 512MB เท่ากับใน iPhone 4
นอกจากนี้รายงานข่าวล่าสุดยังอ้างอีกด้วยว่า Apple จะออก iPad เวอร์ชันหน้าจอ 7 นิ้ว เพื่อรองรับความต้องการของตลาดที่ต้องการ iPad ที่มีขนาดเล็กกว่ารุ่นปัจจุบันที่ 9.7 นิ้ว แต่ถึงแม้หน้าจอจะเล็กลง แต่ความละเอียดยังคงเท่ากับรุ่นแรกคือ 1,024×768 พิกเซล อย่างไรก็ตาม ประเด็นที่เป็นคำถามก็คือ หน้าจอของ iPad รุ่นใหม่จะใช้เทคโนโลยี Retina Display หรือไม่? เนื่องจาก iPad จะมีความหนาแน่นของพิกเซลเพียง 132 ppi (pixels per inch) ในขณะที่ iPhone 4 จะมีความละเอียด 326 ppi ได้แต่หวังว่า iPad รุ่นใหม่จะมีราคาไม่แพงกว่าเดิมมากนัก
